There are real challenges to the relevance of sustainable development. Really? Without mainstreaming Information Technology (IT) innovation into sustainable development many of the noble global goals will be unattainable. The main issue is smart and sustainable development. The world's need for sustainability is not in doubt. But if it isn't smart can it be sustainable? Continual conflicts, growing inequalities, environmental devastation and cyber threats are some issues challenging sustainable development. World leaders at the United Nations (UN) summit in September 2015 adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in recognition of this truth. The agenda came into force on 1 January, 2016. In today's digitally connected and enabled world IT innovation is integral to growth. It is integral to achieving sustainable development. Interestingly, the 13th International Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) was themed “Information Technology Innovation for Sustainable Development”.
According to a release from NCS, the conference provided a unique opportunity to bring together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, the United Nations, multilateral agencies, international organizations, youth groups and civil society to share knowledge and experiences towards leveraging IT Innovation to achieve more sustainable and inclusive societies. Actionable initiatives and solutions were developed through collaborative dialogue, idea sharing, keynotes, presentations, demonstrations and panels during the Conference.
