06:50 am on 2013-09-28
Several workshops have been held by the African Children Cyber Safety Initiative (ACCSI) on the "World Information Society and Telecommunication Day" since 2009 hosted under the auspices of Jidaw Systems Limited the appointed secretariat of the African Information Security Association (AISA) in Africa.
Jidaw appreciates the interest shown by children, schools, various institutions, educators, parents, teachers and other stakeholders in meeting global cyber safety standards.
The alarming facts revealed by the workshops show the dangerous nature of the problem at hand. The statistics are frightening and we must simply act quickly to protect children in today's online world. Studies have also shown that the psychological damage to children is serious and long lasting.
In the light of the above and as a follow up to the decisions taken
at the workshop especially in the area of information security for schools and
online child protection, Jidaw recommends that educational institutions take advantage
of the following safety initiative programmes for schools in the use of
technology in the education sector:
1.
Information Security for Schools and Online Child Protection
This involves sensitizing the entire school community by creating awareness about the importance of information security and the need to protect children online.
2. Information Security Training for all Staff
This is a specialized training designed to equip staff with fundamental information security knowledge and skills required to follow globally acceptable best practices.
3. Online Protection for Children
This is a practical training and guide on online safety for children. This will inform children on the risks of exposure to the internet and teach them how to protect themselves from exploitation and abuse.
4. Information Technology Entrepreneurship Training for Children
This involves teaching children on the fundamentals of information technology entrepreneurship. The training will equip children with skills for setting up an IT business, customer service, professionalism, idea generation and market orientation.
Investment
required for each programme depends on the number of participants and other
requirements).
New
opportunities are offered for education and growth through Information Security;
in addition, the educational institution can use the programmes to maintain
leadership by improving performance, equipping students, staff and management with
global best practices in Child Online Protection and utilizing the latest cutting
edge security techniques.
As a
critical initiative, it is no wonder that the African Children Cyber Safety Initiative (ACCSI) is recognized by The International Centre for Missing &
Exploited Children (ICMEC) the leading global service agency working to
protect the world's children from exploitation and abduction.
ACCSI is globally recognized through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) the leading United Nations (UN) agency for information and communication technology issues and is registered in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Stocking platform, the global UN initiative for the foundation of an Information Society for all.
Jidaw highly recommends these programmes to visionary educators, schools and educational institutions.
The Children are the Future. Really? Make that a Reality and not a loud empty slogan! The children deserve better. They deserve the best!
