Microsoft releases free SQL management tool
Microsoft has released another test version of its forthcoming SQL Server 2005 database and has introduced a free management tool. This is the second "community technology preview" of SQL Server 2005.
A final version of the database SQL Server 2005, code-named Yukon, is due by the second half of 2005.
The second "community technology preview" adds features--namely the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and Integration Services software--for running database programs on 64-bit processors.
Microsoft uses the Community Technology Preview scheme is to provide interim builds that allow developers to test and experiment with new features as they are added to SQL Server 2005.
The Microsoft release states, "The second SQL Server 2005 CTP is now available to all
MSDN and Betaplace subscribers. A CTP is an interim build that provides the community with the ability to test and experiment with new features as they are added to SQL Server 2005. In addition to many quality and performance enhancements, this CTP will introduce 64-bit support for SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and SQL Server 2005 Integration Services on top of the 64-bit support already included for the database engine".
Microsoft also unveiled a technical preview, or early version, SQL Server 2005 Express Manager, a new management tool. SQL Server 2005 Express is a free, low-end version of Microsoft's database designed for relatively simple applications. It is meant to simplify database administration tasks for SQL Server 2005 Express, as well as for SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine.
"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Manager is a new, free database management tool. Designed for ease of use SQL Server 2005 Express Manager is filled with features to simplify, automate, and reduce the complexity of database support and administration".
According to the release, the management tool is "Built on top of the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0., SQL Server 2005 Express Manager can be used to manage SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) and SQL Server 2005 Developer and Express Edition databases on local and remote computers".
SQL Server 2005 Express Manager is available for download
Oracle, Microsoft and IBM are the top three database sellers. Microsoft's key database product is Microsoft SQL Server, which Microsoft describes as "part of the Windows Server System, and the complete database and analysis offering for rapidly delivering the next generation of scalable e-commerce, line-of-business and business intelligence solutions".
