Sun releases Java Tiger

Sun is updating Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) with the 5.0 version. J2SE 5.0 version, known as "Tiger," focuses on ease of development, monitoring and manageability, startup time, and support for multiple desktop clients. According to Sun, "J2SE 5.0 is a significant release including many new features and updates while preserving compatibility and stability".

J2SE attempts to provide a complete environment for applications development on desktops and servers. And Sun regards it is the premier platform for rapidly developing and deploying secure, portable applications that run on server and desktop systems spanning most operating systems. It also serves as the foundation for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Java Web Services. A future release of J2EE Version 5.0 is expected to take advantage of features in J2SE 5.0.

J2SE is currently slated to contain 15 component JSRs with nearly 100 other significant updates developed through the Java Community Process (JCP) which includes input from a variety of constituents. Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 is a major feature release and Sun has described it as the most important Java technology release in years.

Highlights of J2SE 5.0 include:

* New language updates and support for metadata, generics, enumerated types, autoboxing of primitive types (primitive types such as integers can be converted to objects)
* New JVM Monitoring and Management API (support for managing Java applications and JVMs through management consoles via SNMP and JMX (Java Management Extensions)
* Improved out-of-box performance - improved startup time performance
* New (but compatible) default Java look and feel - new feature called "Ocean" provides for a cross-platform look and feel for Java applications and a native look and feel function for applications being run on Windows XP or Macintosh
