10 TIPS FOR MAKING A CAREER CHOICE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

http://www.jidaw.com/certarticles/careertips.html

Information Technology Certification is a growing trend that can't be ignored by anyone that has an interest in the information technology industry. It is a popular route for starting information technology careers. The seminar looks at three specific certifications (A+, Network+ and CCNA). Certification is popular but some fail and others pass. Why?

Start by understanding What Certification can do and What you need to do for yourself:

  • IT certification is a career tool that can't be ignored by anyone who has an interest in the IT industry.

  • But how you assess certification is dependent on the quality of information you have about what certification is and what it can do.

  • You can't get the best of out certification with "Half knowledge", unrealistic expectations and a poor career focus. In view of huge amount of feedback we receive on certification there is a need for more careful and wise decision making in order to stop wasting resources and effort.

  • Certification is not a cure-all and is not the only tool for advancing an IT Career. You need to know how IT careers are built and how to use effective career growth methods.

  • Knowing all the different career tools and getting certified from "cover to cover" will not get you anywhere without the right approach.

  • "Paper" certification has no value. Certification arose from the need to have competent professionals that could deliver value in specific IT areas in the workplace. You cannot give what you don't have.

  • The question: "what is the best certification?" is of no relevance. The questions should be: "Is certification for me?" "If certification is for me, which certification (s) do I need to achieve my career goals? How should I achieve chosen certifications?"

Intro to Tech Support Career

Technical support involves the installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of computers and related equipment. To effectively carry out preventive and curative measures, logical skills and a real understanding of how the equipment works will come into play here.

It is the busiest area of information technology. The most popular certification for tech support is A+. Tech support using A+ as a standard is ideal for newcomers, Tech Support professionals and other information technology professionals who need solid foundational skills in hardware and software.

Intro to Networking Career

Of the entire IT career fields currently available, few can offer the diversity that computer networking provides. Computer networking has been growing and is forecasted to remain one of the primary growth areas of the information technology industry.

With networking comes the demand for skilled individuals that can work on the various aspects of networking. Networking is a knowledge intensive field. A Networking career is one is that is high pressure, knowledge intensive and requires analytical and problem management abilities.

Most companies have installed computer networks and they all need skilled individuals (in-house or external) to manage their networks.
